Syed Ali Shah Geelani incommuniccado, Family concerned

Srinagar, MTT News Desk: The Chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who continues to be under house arrest in New Delhi for past 16 days, has been held incommunicado with the Indian authorities having put additional restrictions on his communication links.

Relatives and family members of Syed Ali Shah Geelani have expressed concern over the restrictions imposed upon his movement and contact with the outside world.

We are deeply concerned as we have not been able to establish contact with him. Mobile phones of both Syed Ali Shah Geelani and his wife are not working. Despite repeated attempts we have not been able to contact them, said Muhammad Altaf Shah, the son-in-law of the veteran Hurriyet leader in a media interview in Srinagar.

He said that the family members and friends were deeply anxious as nobody was accompanying the couple at their residence, except the policemen. Today we came to know from some sources that even a barber who had gone to the house had not been allowed entry by the police, he added.

The relatives demanded immediate release of Syed Ali Shah Geelani from the house arrest and restoration of his communications links.

Another family member of the APHC Chairman said that police have snatched away cell phones of Gilani and they are not allowing anyone including his family members to see him. We are very much concerned over his (Gilanis) health, he added.

Pertinently, the Tahreek e Hurriyat leader, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai had said on Friday that the party leaders had not been able to establish contact with Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

The APHC Chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani was put under house arrest at his Delhi residence soon after hanging of Muhammad Afzal Guru at Delhis infamous Tihar jail on February 9.

The medical students in Occupied State of Jammu & Kashmir (OSJK), doctors and para-medics staged a protest demonstration in the premises of Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar against the hanging of Muhammad Afzal Guru.

This is the worst form of human rights violation which Indian state has committed against the Kashmiris who have always been pushed to the wall. We are protesting here against the hanging of innocent Afzal who was not given a fair trial, said a protester.

The resident Doctors said, New Delhi should return the body of Azal and as doctors we cannot remain immune to the happenings in our society, this has hurt our collective conscience.

The medicos were carrying placards that read I am Afzal hang me, Why murder us to satisfy your collective conscience.

Meanwhile, it was also decided that the heritage park in the GMC would be called as Afzal Memorial Park.
