Governor Punjab Salman Taseer assassinatedIslamabad, January 04, 2010: The Governor of Punjab, Mr. Salman Taseer had been assassinated in Kohsaar Market, located in F-6 sector of Islamabad.

He was about to ride into his car, when personnel of Elite Force, serving as his body guard together with 5 others, opened fire on him. Mr. Salman Taseer was taken to the nearest Poly Clinic hospital in the police van, but could not survive.

The elite force personal, Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, had been arrested on the spot by other personals of Elite Force and later handed over to the police. The rest of the squad, responsible for Mr. Salman Taseer’s protection, had also been arrested on uncertainties and locked up in Kohsaar police station.

According to some of the sources, Governor Punjab, Mr. Salman Taseer had been gunned down with 22 bullets. However, credible sources claim that he had received 9 bullets in total at chest, neck and head. In addition to the personals of Elite Force, responsible for security of the Governor, police had

also arrested few other unknown persons from the crime scene. Who will later be investigated.

The provincial DIG had already ordered to arrest and lock up the whole squad Elite Force of the governor. The investigation had also been launched immediately after his assassination.

The police and other law enforcement agencies had locked the area and collecting evidences from the crime scene to be used in interrogation.

The initial investigation revealed that the killer, Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri had killed Mr. Salman Taseer for his alleged support to a female defendant in Blasphemy case and for calling Blasphemy Laws in Pakistan as “Black Law”.

The federal interior minister, Mr. Rahman Malik revealed that the killer of Mr. Salman Taseer, Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, had confessed the crime and said that he had killed Mr. Salman Taseer over his statement, calling the Blasphemy Laws as a “black law”.

“We will see whether it was an individual act or someone had asked him to do it” said by Mr. Rahman Malik.

“The killer after attacking the governor with his weapon has surrendered to the security forces, moments after shooting the governor dead. Qadri was immediately arrested.” Added by the federal interior minister, Mr. Rahman Malik.

The President of Pakistan, Mr. Asif Ali Zardari had strongly condemned the killing of the governor of Punjab, Mr. Salman Taseer and instructed the federal interior minister, Mr. Rahman Malik to “personally supervise” the official investigation and report back to him, as soon as possible.

The President Mr. Asif Ali Zardari, who was heading a meeting of members of the Sindh provincial assembly in Karachi, had sent the Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah to Lahore to take part in Mr. Salman Taseer’s funeral. The President, Mr. Asif Ali Zardari said that the perpetrator of the crime must be punished.

While paying tributes to the late Governor of the Punjab, Mr. Salman Taseer, the President, Mr. Asif Ali Zardari said, “Salman Taseer was endowed with great courage and energy who employed these qualities in the service of the province and the country”

The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr. Yousaf Raza Geelani also strongly condemned the killing of late governor of the Punjab province and said that the killer must be punished according to the law.

Mr. Yousaf Raza Geelani had called on workers and supporters of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), of which Taseer was a leading member, “to remain calm” to allow a proper investigation.

Through a statement, issued from the office of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, It has been decided that the PPP will observe two weeks of mourning over the assassination of Mr. Salman Taseer. “Mr. Yousaf Raza Geelani also announced a three-day national mourning period following the assassination of Mr. Salman Taseer” said in the statement issued from Prime Minister house.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) had announce two weeks long mourning over the killing of Mr. Salman Taseer. While talking to the media in Karachi, Mrs. Fozia Wahab, the information secretary of PPP, had termed the killing of Mr. Salman Taseer as one more “martyrdom” and termed Mr. Salman Taseer as brave, honest and loyal worker of Pakistan People’s Party.

The foreign national chief of Karachi based MQM, Mr. Altaf Hussain sees the killing of Mr. Salman Taseer as another conspiracy against Pakistan and urged that those, who are involved in the tragic incident are infect the enemies of Pakistan.

Mr. Salman Taseer had been appointed as governor of the Punjab province on 15 May 2008 in replacement of Lt. Gen. Khalid Maqbool (Retd). Mr. Salman Taseer was an active member of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and was believed to be strong supporter of current Zardari regime in the country. His appointment as the governor of the Punjab province is believed to be a chess play of Mr. President, Asif Ali Zardari to keep provincial government of PML-N at bay.

Through out his tenure as the governor of the Punjab province, Mr. Salman Taseer gave tough time to the provincial government and effectively performed his duties, entrusted to him by the President of the country, Mr. Asif Ali Zardari.

However, his open support to a female defendant in the Blasphemy case is believed to become the prime reason of his assassination.

He had just recently visited the female defendant and assured her, his full support and, despite the court had found her guilty, openly condemned the punishment given to her in the court.

Mr. Salman Taseer was a member of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). He also served as a minister in the caretaker cabinet of former Prime Minister Mohammad Mian Soomro under Pervaiz Musharraf regime. Salman Taseer was also the chairman and CEO of the First Capital and Worldcall Group.
